everything we do is music, the drawing room, december 2017

In Everything we do is music, figurative approaches start with the miniature Indian paintings known as the Ragamalas (a genre emerging in the second half of the 15th century, in which an attempt is made to capture an associated mood or character of raga through a staged tableau):https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raga

The contemporary work by the female artist, Shahzia Sikander, 'Disruption as Rapture', was a highlight of the exhibition. Sikander explores history, politics, and current events, as well as interpersonal themes. She trained under a traditional master and has more recently produced video installation work.

During the exhibition, the Ubu Ensemble from the Guild School of Music, conducted by Simon Wills, performed John Cage - Sixteen Dances (1951) and the masterpiece by Terry Riley - In C (1964). The performances reference the influence Indian classical music has had on western composers.
